    How to Control Foam in Alkaline Metal Cleaning Lines

    A CNC tank can look calm and the washer can still overflow. Alkaline metal cleaning lines combine heat, spray, high pH, and soil load. That mix builds foam fast. The washer then loses capacity, sensors trip, and parts leave with a film that later cleaning or coating has to fight.

    Why alkaline washers foam so easily

    Foam in a parts washer is not only leftover coolant. Alkaline builders, surfactants, heated tanks, and high-pressure spray keep creating new bubbles. Oil, chips, and dragged-in metalworking fluid make the foam tougher.

    A defoamer that worked in the CNC sump can fail here. The washer is hotter, more alkaline, and more violent. If the product cannot stay dispersed under spray, foam returns within a few baskets.

    The hidden cost is not only foam. It is a cleaner that no longer wets the part the same way after too much antifoam.

    What a metal cleaning defoamer has to survive

    An alkaline parts-washer defoamer should stay effective in a severe cleaning system: strong alkali, middle-to-high temperature, and high-pressure spray. It should disperse in water, resist shear, leave no floating oil, and wash off before the part moves on.

    The product also has to protect the cleaner itself. If the defoamer splits, hazes the bath, or leaves a film, the washer may look quieter while parts get worse.

    Do not copy the CNC dose into the washer

    Shops often take the same drum from the machine tool to the cleaning line. That is the usual reason foam returns. Coolant foam and washer foam are linked, but they are not the same system.

    Check the washer first: temperature, spray pressure, oil skimming, and how much machining fluid is dragged in. Then choose an industrial cleaning defoamer for that bath, not a leftover machining grade.
