Foam in wastewater treatment can severely reduce aeration efficiency and cause costly compliance issues. When selecting a water treatment defoamer, making the wrong choice can do more harm than good. Here are four common mistakes engineers make and how to fix them:

Ignoring the Root Cause
Not all foam is created equal. Biological foam (often caused by filamentous bacteria) requires process adjustments, not just chemical treatment. Relying solely on defoamers for biological foam is a temporary fix; you must address the sludge age and dissolved oxygen levels first.
Using Silicone in Membrane Systems
Silicone-based defoamers are fast-acting but are the enemy of RO and UF membranes. Even trace amounts cause irreversible fouling. Always use silicone-free alternatives, such as polyether defoamers, for any membrane filtration systems.
Overdosing the Chemical
More is not always better. Excessive dosing of mineral oil-based defoamers can cause "oil slicking," which blocks oxygen transfer and harms downstream biological treatment. Conduct simple jar tests to determine the minimum effective dose, typically between 10-20 ppm.
Relying on a Single Product
Wastewater characteristics fluctuate daily. A defoamer that works in summer may fail in winter. Adopt a dual strategy: use a fast-acting silicone emulsion for sudden foam spikes, and a cost-effective polyether blend for continuous background prevention.
